this is something ive thought about on several occasions… where does ones personal feelings come into play when it comes down to the personal feelings about an artist and their art?
I’ve not been in the art community as long as some but I’ve moved around enough to come across instances like this where you tend to have to ask yourself that question “what do i do with this?”
example.
if i show you an amazing piece of art , and ask you if you like it and you say yes…
then inform you that the artist is in fact a listed pedophile…
how would you feel about the art then?
i think for most it becomes a weird kind of grey area, where you don’t want to like the art because you don’t like the idea of “supporting” that kind of person… however before you were aware of that information would it have been the same feeling?
granted this example is fairly extreme as worst case scenarios is the artist is just an asshole. of which is a lot easier to chew.
way i see it is… no artist is perfect. talent never guarantees a pristine persona. sometimes i feel its better to appreciate a piece of art you like because you like it… as opposed to disliking it on account of the artists personality. the art itself never did you an injustice… as a matter of fact you liked it. you just did not like the artists personality but why does that matter… by looking at their work you aren’t required to befriend them… you aren’t going to be betrothed by clicking the like button on their work.
so in the end… why does the artists personality affect their work beyond your own bias. in my opinion its a loss missing out on something you enjoy just because of something like that.
